Who's who
Miss Allen is the class teacher in year 1. Miss Hughes, Miss Peters and Mrs Chandler are the support staff who work in key stage 1 and support the children with their learning.
Important information
PE
Our Year 1 PE sessions are on a Monday and Friday afternoon. Please ensure all PE kits and school uniform (including socks, underwear, and shoes) are named. Please ensure PE kits are always in school. Your child will bring home their PE kit at half term to be washed. Please make sure this is returned on the first day back.
Forest School
Year 1 will be going to Forest School on a Friday afternoon. Please ensure that your child comes into school with their Forest School kit. Your child will need suitable, warm and waterproof outdoor clothing and welly boots, which is allowed to get muddy. The all-in-one rain suits are a great idea, as the children can wear these over their uniform! We ask that all Forest School kit is named, including welly boots. Welly boots will stay at school to be used for our outdoor activities.
Forest School for Year 1 will be every other term – term 1, 3 and 5.
Reading at Home
We will change your child’s reading book once a week on a Friday. Please ensure that their book has been read four times so that we are able to change it. Regular reading at home is key in supporting your child to make progress in their reading and learning. Don’t worry if your child has had the book before, we always say that a good book is worth reading more than once! It is helpful to us if you sign or initial in your child’s reading record to show that you have looked at the book at home and are ready for a change.
Essential Letters and Sounds
Your child will be continuing to learn Phonics through the ELS scheme. We are completing two weeks of review and will then begin to recap Phase 5 sounds that have been previously taught in the Summer Term in Reception. Your child will be completing a Phonics Screening Check in June 2024. It is, therefore, vital that your child is practising the sounds they have been taught at home, alongside reading. More information about the Phonics Screening Check will be communicated nearer the time.
Homework
At the end of every week, we will send home copies of the sounds that have been learnt to support your child’s progression in Phonics. Please ensure folders are in book-bags on a Friday. Spelling bookmarks will be introduced later in the term with harder to read and spell words for pupils to practise.
English and Maths – pupils will be given suggested activities based on their current learning.
Your child will receive an optional piece of homework based on their current learning in the foundation subjects – this might be DT, History or Music!
